David Del Tredici: A Field Manual
Robert Kyr: Working Fire/Fireworks Variations

David Del Tredici’s A Field Manual – a 40-minute setting of five of New York poet Edward Field’s most ebullient, funny and sexy poems – is scored for high soprano, baritone and the eight-piece “electrified” ensemble. Robert Kyr’s Working Fire/Fireworks includes two sets of variations based on powerful hymns from The Sacred Harp, a renowned collection of America’s first choral music. The second set of variations on the program, Fireworks Variations, takes as its starting point the familiar hymn Amazing Grace, and features the entire ensemble in a little “concerto for chamber orchestra” in which all each player is featured in a solo context before all of the instruments are synthesized in a series of rhythmic dance-like variations that eventually unfold into a resplendent chorale texture.
