Cottoning to Los Angeles - James Conlon has made good first impressions since taking over last year as music director of L.A. Opera.
AFTER just a few months on the job, Los Angeles Opera music director James Conlon has already had a salutary effect on the company's orchestra. The English National Opera is to cut 10% of its staff, axing about 45 jobs.
The ENO said the losses, to include performers and technical staff, were needed to make it "artistically and financially viable in the long term". It is aiming to cut fixed costs - £20m of its £30m turnover - saying it feared reduced funding if government money to the Arts Council did not increase.

Adams' new opera 'A Flowering Tree' rooted in Mozart's 'The Magic Flute'

High-tech opera packing 'em in
The best may be yet to come in the Metropolitan Opera's high-definition movie-theater simulcasts. The cast, production and music of Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin promise to be a particularly distinguished package when transmitted to four area movie theaters at 1:30 this afternoon. For the sake of those just now returning from Christmas vacation on a desert island, these simulcasts have significantly changed the way opera can be consumed. "We've had a lot of people who didn't know it was going to be so popular. Many didn't realize you needed to buy tickets in advance," said Met spokeswoman Sommer Hixson. "That's why we scheduled the encores." To read this article try: Email: info@concert-hall.com Password: proklassika2

Ever since Arturo Toscanini himself held the podium there, Milan's Teatro alla Scala has had a strict rule: no encores.
